WHAT A REGATTA IT WAS!

Parties have been held.

Races have been sailed.

Trophies have been awarded.

The donation site will remain open for a few more weeks, but the 2026 New York Architects Regatta is in the books, as they say.

And what a Regatta it was.

The usual delights of our pre-race “Skippers’ Meeting” cocktail party at the New York Yacht Club included an inspiring presentation by Buttons Padin about the Robie Pierce Regattas. Buttons shared some wonderful stories about the challenges overcome by sailors who simply want the opportunity to race.

The Robie Pierce Regattas are a great example of the Architects Regatta’s mission: supporting organizations that expand access to the waters that make up this region, whether through sailing, education, recreation, environmental stewardship, or simply making the waterfront available to people who might otherwise never experience it.

Then came race day.

Thursday’s races were…interesting!

The incoming Nor’easter was already affecting local weather, and the start of racing was delayed while conditions calmed down a bit. The Non-Spinnaker fleet braved the turbulent, gusty conditions first and completed two races. By the time the Spinnaker fleet took to the water in the afternoon, things had eased enough to race without sail restrictions.

“Eased,” however, is a relative term. The wind remained decidedly shifty and uneven, at times changing direction by close to 180 degrees. It was the kind of day that rewarded patience, adaptability and perhaps a sense of humor.

With Dyckman Street Marina closed for renovations, this year’s Regatta returned to Hudson River Community Sailing’s Chelsea location at Pier 66, where we raced from 2015 through 2019.

The return to Chelsea also created an opportunity for something new. Classic Harbor Line provided a VIP spectator experience aboard the magnificent Manhattan II. Guests, including our major sponsors, enjoyed a close-up view of the racing with expert commentary from Robert Burke, Executive Director of Hudson River Community Sailing. Regular Regatta spectators called it the best “watch party” we’ve ever had, and we’re already looking forward to doing it again next year.

Despite the chaotic conditions, everyone arrived at the Lerch Bates After-Party in great spirits. After two years with so little wind that we could barely race at all, this was a welcome change.

Next year, however, maybe something in the middle?

Congratulations to our winners

Congratulations to Turner Construction, winners of the Non-Spinnaker fleet, and Allen + Killcoyne Architects, winners of the Spinnaker fleet. Full results are below.

But the racing is only part of the story.

This year, 19 boats took to the water, representing architecture, engineering, construction and the broader design community. Together, our teams and sponsors contributed more than $156,000 in support of the Regatta and the organizations we serve.

That works out to more than $8,200 per boat — a higher average than last year. That is an extraordinary accomplishment by the teams who participated, and by the hundreds of people who donated to support them.

If you are receiving this newsletter because you made one of those donations: thank you. If you sailed, organized a team, asked friends and colleagues to contribute, sponsored the event, volunteered, donated an auction item, hosted us, or helped make the Regatta possible in some other way: thank you, too.

The Architects Regatta has always been built on a fairly simple idea: bring our professional community together for a great day on the water and use that gathering to help more people experience the waterfront we are fortunate enough to enjoy.

Twenty-five years after the first Architects Regatta, that idea is still working.

The 2026 donation site will remain open for a few more weeks. There is still time to support the Regatta and the organizations we serve.

Thank you for being part of the 2026 New York Architects Regatta.

We’ll see you on the water in 2027.
