Dreaming Big: The Architects Regatta and Olympic Sailing

As the new year begins, things are usually quiet at Regatta Central while we reflect on the past year and enjoy the holiday season. However, we’re far from idle. With the page now turned on our calendars, we’re ramping up efforts to make the 2025 Regatta even better than 2024.

We also use thei quiet time to check in with with some of our charity partners and I want to share an inspiring update about The Sailing Foundation of New York (SFNY). The Architects Regatta makes two grants to SFNY annually: one dedicated to the Robie Pierce Regattas (featured in our June newsletter) and the other unrestricted. SFNY allocated this unrestricted grant to support the 2028 U.S. Olympic Sailing Team—a mission we enthusiastically endorsed.

Why Olympic Sailing?
Our mission at the Architects Regatta is to support sailing at all levels, from community programs to elite competitions. And there’s no higher stage in our sport than the Olympics.

The last time the Olympics were held in Los Angeles, in 1984, U.S. sailing experienced a golden era. American sailors medaled in all seven classes (three golds, four silvers)—a historic achievement. Since then, results have dwindled, and in 2024 at the Paris Games, Team USA earned just one medal across 10 classes.

Looking ahead to the Los Angeles Games in 2028, SFNY has partnered with American Magic, AmericaOne Racing, and the Schoonmaker Foundation to support a talented group of sailors determined to compete for gold. Their ambitious goal: bring home at least five medals and restore Team USA to Olympic sailing greatness.

The Road to Gold
The path to the Olympics demands extraordinary commitment. Athletes will spend over 200 days a year on the water, supported by sailing coaches, trainers, sports psychologists, dieticians, and equipment specialists. Annual budgets range from $150,000 to $300,000 per class—a significant investment in the pursuit of excellence.

While Olympic sailing may feel worlds apart from Wednesday night “beer can” races or the annual excitement of the Architects Regatta, it’s worth remembering that every elite sailor starts somewhere. Kids learning to sail in Optis—like those in programs supported by your donations—dream big. Olympic hopefuls like Charlotte Rose, Noah Runciman, and Noah Lyons were once those kids. Now, they’re chasing golden dreams, and your support is helping make their aspirations a reality.

Thank You
As we embark on this new year, let’s take pride in what we’ve accomplished together. Your contributions to the Architects Regatta are creating opportunities for young sailors and helping Olympic hopefuls get one step closer to their dreams.

Thank you for making 2024 another remarkable year for the Regatta.

Happy New Year,
